About the Project

What is ASD Strategies in Action?

The Autism Certification Center’s ASD Strategies in Action is an innovative online video training program that will provide practical information and skills, demonstrated with real-life examples in a variety of settings, for those who interact with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Why was this video-based training program developed?

Leveraging Ohio’s leadership in autism and with the support from the Ohio General Assembly, OCALI identified and filled a gap: the need for more trained service providers to meet growing demand and the need for more consistent, broad-based community support for parents and families. The intended outcome of the training is that both individuals and families will have a better quality of life.

Why is video-based learning beneficial?

Many of us are visual learners. So to really help people understand autism strategies and supports, we show what they look like in real settings with real people who are supporting or working with individuals with ASD. Instead of reading about what these strategies look like, you will see them in action.

Who was involved in developing ASD Strategies in Action?

ASD Strategies in Action is a collaborative effort across multiple state agencies to put information into the hands of more people with the goal of making life better for the individuals, parents, and families we serve together. The program was funded under the leadership of the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education and the Governor’s Office of Health Transformation.

This training program, based on evidence-based practices, was developed in consultation with internationally renowned experts, family members, and individuals with ASD.

ASD Strategies in Action has also been made possible through video production services provided by Brainstorm Media, Inc.

Who should complete this program?

ASD Strategies in Action is meant for anyone in our community. You may be a family member of someone on the autism spectrum, an employer hiring an individual on the autism spectrum, a teacher’s assistant working in an early childhood education center, a general or special educator, or a job coach looking to support somebody on the job. This program gives families and service providers (even in the most rural areas of our state) tools to ensure they are equipped to effectively care for, support, educate, employ, or work with individuals with ASD from early childhood to young adulthood. It is organized by age and by strategy to allow easy access to the information that is most relevant to the user.

Course Overview

What is included in this training?

The training includes an introductory course, Many Faces of Autism, which is approximately 1.5 hours in length. This course is a prerequisite and must be completed before moving on to the other courses available to you. If you choose to move on, you will find three additional Foundations of Evidence-based Strategies courses: Toddler and Preschool Age, School Age, and Transition Age. Each of these courses contains multiple modules covering specific strategies and is approximately 10 to 15 hours in length. Modules are divided into chapters. Throughout the chapters, the video will pause and questions appear in a pop-up window. When you finish watching all of the chapters in a module, you will complete a 10-item assessment. You will also note that each course contains a pre- and post-course assessment.

Can I just watch the videos?

This training program was designed to expand your learning and help you apply what you have learned to your interactions with individuals with ASD. Therefore, courses include assessments, as well as reflection and comprehension questions embedded within the video chapters. Your individual responses will not be shared with others and scores will not appear on any course documentation.

Once you begin a course, you will complete the modules in the order in which they appear on the site. After completing a chapter, you can return to any of the previously viewed chapters to watch the videos again. You can view them as many times as you wish throughout your subscription.

What is included on the Course Page?

The Course Page is where you will have access to the pre- and post-course assessments, the modules featuring specific strategies, and the course survey to be completed at the end. You can return to this page to track your progress in a course. Each module indicates how far you are in the module with numbers at the top right of each module box.

What is included in a module and module chapter?

The modules within each course focus on a specific strategy. The modules are separated into video chapters that provide real-life examples of the strategy in action, as well as reflection and chapter questions. Each chapter provides the module description and objectives, an interactive transcript, chapter notes that you can save, references, and an interactive glossary with keywords for the module, as well as any other terms that may not be familiar.

You can track your progress through a module via the module progress bar, as well as with the Previous and Next Chapter buttons that appear to the right of the video on each chapter page. When you complete a chapter, which includes answering the questions and watching the entire video, the Next Chapter button will be highlighted for you to proceed on. At any point you can return to a previous module or chapter. At the end of the module, you will take a ten-item assessment to measure what you have learned in the module.

Will this training include a quiz or final exam? How is that information used?

To assist you with expanding your knowledge and applying what you have learned in the training to your experiences, a course includes the following assessments and questions. Individual responses and scores are for your own use and for our research purposes. They will not be shared with others.

  • Pre- and Post-Course Assessments: Before starting a course, you will complete a fifty-item pre-assessment to determine your level of knowledge before starting a course. At the end of the course, another assessment will be given to measure the knowledge you have gained. While taking these assessments, you will not be able to access any of the other site features. Before submitting your answers, you can go back to review and/or change your response. Successful completion of a post-course assessment requires a score of 80% or above. You will have as many opportunities as you need to take this assessment. Note: Many Faces of Autism does NOT include pre- and post-course assessments.
  • Module Assessments: After completing the chapters within a module, you will be asked to complete a ten-item assessment to measure what you have learned. Before submitting your answers, you can go back to review and/or change your response. Successful completion of a module requires a score of 80% or above. You will have as many opportunities as you need to take this assessment and will also be provided with suggested chapters to review before retaking the assessment.
  • Chapter Questions: While viewing a chapter, you will be prompted at various times to answer questions. There are comprehension questions for you to check your understanding of what you just learned and reflection questions for you to consider how you can apply what you learned to your own experiences. Questions appear in a pop-up window when the video pauses and a “Please Answer the Question” slide appears. Once you have answered the question and clicked submit, you can then close the question window and start the video to continue the chapter. With each completed answer, a checkmark will appear next to that question in the question box located to the right of the video. You must complete all questions before proceeding to the next chapter. Your answers to the reflection questions can then be downloaded from the Course Page and Dashboard.

Will I need to complete this course in a certain amount of time?

The course was designed to complete at your own pace during your subscription period. You can stop and start the video at any point. If you stop before completing a chapter, please note that the video will restart at the beginning of that chapter. You can always visit the Dashboard to monitor your progress and to resume the training where you leave off.

Please also note that the site will not log you out automatically. We encourage you to log out after each session, especially if you are using a public computer.

Can I download or access my course materials?

By visiting the Dashboard, you can download a progress report, course notes, reflection questions, and certificate validating successful completion of the course. These documents will be available for download at anytime even after your subscription has expired. Simply log in to your account to access course materials completed during your subscription period.

Can I download videos to watch offline?

Videos are only available online. All content on the site is the intellectual property of OCALI. You may not reproduce, reprint, publish, or otherwise download or exploit content or technology from the site without our express prior written consent.

What does “certificate” mean and how can it be used?

The ASD Strategies in Action certificate validates that the learner has met all criteria for successful completion of that course as established by the Autism Certification Center. While learners will be able to use the course reports and certificates to earn professional development hours, the program is designed so that every user can gain knowledge and implement the skills learned immediately.

Can I access more than one course at a time?

After the completion of the introductory course, Many Faces of Autism, you will then have access to complete any of the courses available with your subscription either one at a time or simultaneously.

Technical Troubleshooting

We work hard to ensure that the Autism Certification Center’s ASD Strategies in Action works across as many platforms as possible. However, we understand that technology can sometimes present challenges. Before getting started, we recommend that you ensure you are securely connected to the Internet and have the latest version of your Internet browser, e.g. Internet Explorer or Safari, installed. If you still encounter a technical issue, we suggest that you refresh your browser or restart your computer.

What devices can I use to access the training?

The ASD Strategies in Action is mobile-friendly and accessible anywhere, anytime on your desktop, laptop, tablets, and phone.

What should I do if a chapter question does not pop up when the slide appears?

Questions will only appear if you are actively engaged on the tab where the video is playing. In the rare event that a question does not appear, you should refresh your Internet browser and restart that video.

Individuals using an iPhone should be aware that the video and chapter questions appear in different windows. Therefore, you will need to switch between the two windows as you complete a chapter.

What do I do if I receive the “Whoops!” screen?

The “Whoops!” screen will appear to assist you with completing needed information to move forward in the training. The “Whoops!” screen will provide you with instruction as to which item(s) needs to be reviewed or corrected.

The video seems to be jumping around. What do I do?

It is possible that you have inadvertently moved the video forward by clicking on the interactive transcript. When the tab to the interactive transcript is open, you can click on any word in the transcript and move the video to that section of the transcript. You can refresh your Internet browser to restart the video from the beginning.
